In 2010, scientists estimated that 1.5 billion of the world’s population was overweight and 500 million were clinically obese. It’s even worse in America, where it’s estimated that 75% of the U.S. population will be overweight or obese by 2020. The roots of these alarming statistics have been growing for a long time: easy access to high-calorie foods and increasingly sedentary lifestyles have led to an energy imbalance. It sounds simple enough — we’re taking in more energy than we’re expending — but there’s more to it. Poor sleep also plays a key role.
